July 20, 1969 – Were you among the estimated 600 million people watching their television to witness one of the greatest achievements of mankind?
Honoring both President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the first landing of man on the moon, this design is the work of the Chief Engraver Frank Gasparro, whose initials are found under the Eaglea s tail feathers. The reverse design is an adaptation of the official Apollo 11 insignia.
First minted in 1971, the design of the Eisenhower dollar was modified several times during its 7-year minting from 1971 to 1978. It was not minted in 1975, and was one of the shortest-lived coins in the history of the U.S. Mint.
